Committee Member, Weymouth Astronomy
Barry is editor of the British Astronomical Association's monthly Lunar Circular and holds the BAA Merlin Prize for a notable contribution to the advancement of astronomy. His specialism is all things Lunar.
In Barry's own words:
I have been interested in Astronomy for over 55 years - and a BAA member off and on for about 50 years. I studied Geology to Postgraduate level but then moved in to Policing and Forensic Archaeology/Anthropology. I have been interested in Lunar Geology since the Apollo missions, and was inspired in the late 80's and early 90's by Keith Abineri, one of the big names in Selenology and the BAA, and contemporary of Patrick Moore, who lived in Wimborne and also studied lunar geology as an amateur.
I try and contribute every month to the BAA Lunar Section newsletter, and also the BAA Journal where I have had a number of articles published. I was awarded the BAA Merlin Prize in 2021 given “in recognition of a contribution to the progress of astronomy over many years”.
I have a small observatory in Dorchester and when I can, I monitor the Moon's surface for Transient Lunar Phenomenon, some of which I believe represent real events and not, as many think, observational errors.
